Azure SQL

Hands-On Azure SQL Database Administration: Managed Databases & Cloud Operations

Managed Databases & Cloud Operations

Take your SQL Server skills to the cloud. In 8 weeks of live labs in real Azure, you learn to choose the right Azure SQL service, deploy and secure databases, monitor and tune them, protect them with backups and failover groups, automate the work and migrate on-premises databases, while keeping costs under control.

How the course is taught

All classes are taught live on Zoom by your instructor, who shares their screen and works through each topic step by step. You follow along and practice on your own computer during the class, ask questions as you go, and get help when you're stuck. Between classes you complete short practice tasks that build on what you learned. Classes may be recorded for educational replay, with access restricted to authorized students in the relevant class.

Who this course is for

This course is for people who already know SQL Server and want to run databases in Microsoft Azure. It suits SQL Server DBAs whose company is moving to the cloud, graduates of our SQL Server DBA course, and experienced IT or database professionals who will look after managed cloud databases. You should already be comfortable with backups, security and basic troubleshooting in SQL Server; the course focuses on what changes in the cloud.

Support after the course

When you complete the course, you get job readiness support in one-on-one sessions with the tutor. The tutor reviews your CV with you, or helps you write one from scratch if you don't have one, and advises you on your LinkedIn profile so your Azure experience stands out. You also have a one-on-one interview with the tutor, who asks the kind of questions cloud DBA employers ask and gives you written feedback on your strengths and gaps. Your capstone, Bicep templates, migration work and runbooks become a portfolio to show employers. This is guidance to help you apply with confidence; it is not job placement.

What you'll learn

Curriculum

8 modules · 32 topics covered

The order the course is taught in. Open a module to see what it covers and the practical work it includes.

Module 01: Getting started in Azure

Your first week gets you working in Azure straight away. In the free first class you learn what Azure manages for you and what stays your responsibility as a DBA, set up a budget alert so costs never surprise you, and deploy your own Azure SQL database. In the second class you compare the Azure SQL services and learn when each one is the right choice.

Module 02: Identity and security

In the cloud, identity and network access replace much of what Windows logins and firewalls did on-premises. This week you learn to use Microsoft Entra ID for database access with least privilege, and to control who can reach the database with firewall rules and private endpoints. You also protect sensitive data with encryption, masking, row-level security and auditing.

Module 03: Monitoring and performance

This week you learn how to know what normal looks like in Azure and what to do when performance drops. You use Azure Monitor metrics and logs to build baselines and alerts, then use Query Store, DMVs and execution plans to find slow or regressed queries. You also learn when to tune a query and when it makes more sense to scale the service.

Module 04: Backup and high availability

Azure takes backups for you, but the DBA still decides how long to keep them and how to recover. This week you learn automatic backups, point-in-time restore and long-term retention. You then design protection against a regional outage with geo-replication and failover groups, based on the business's RPO and RTO.

Module 05: Automation

Clicking through the Azure portal doesn't scale. This week you learn infrastructure as code with Azure CLI, PowerShell and Bicep, so every deployment can be repeated exactly. You also automate recurring operations with elastic jobs, Azure Automation and alerts that trigger actions.

Module 06: Migration and validation

Moving existing databases to Azure is one of the most common cloud DBA projects. This week you learn to assess an on-premises database, choose between Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance and SQL Server on an Azure VM, and pick an offline or online migration method. You then carry out a migration and prove that the new database works.

Module 07: Scaling and governance

In the cloud, every size decision has a monthly cost. This week you learn to size databases correctly and when serverless, elastic pools or Hyperscale make sense. You also set up governance: naming and tagging, Azure RBAC, Azure Policy and Microsoft Defender for Cloud, and a review routine that keeps security and costs in check.

Module 08: Final Azure operations capstone

The final week is where you show what you can do. You build a secure, monitored Azure SQL environment from business requirements, then respond to an incident the instructor injects by restoring or failing over and validating the service. The week also includes your one-on-one interview with the tutor and the start of your job readiness support.

By the end of the course

  • Choose between Azure SQL Database, elastic pools, Managed Instance and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
  • Provision and connect securely to Azure SQL, and keep costs under control.
  • Implement Microsoft Entra authentication and least-privilege database access.
  • Configure network security, encryption and auditing.
  • Monitor Azure SQL with metrics, logs and Query Store.
  • Diagnose query regressions, blocking and resource pressure.
  • Perform point-in-time restore and define retention.
  • Design and test geo-replication and failover groups.
  • Automate deployments and operations with Azure CLI, PowerShell or Bicep.
  • Assess, migrate and validate a SQL Server database in Azure.
  • Scale and govern resources with cost awareness.
  • Deploy and operate a secure Azure SQL environment under failure.

Before you start

  • Our SQL Server DBA course is the recommended preparation: this course assumes you already know how SQL Server works on-premises.
  • Equivalent experience as a DBA, or with SQL Server in an IT role, may let you start here directly.
  • A short readiness assessment before the free class tells you whether to take the SQL Server DBA course first.
  • You need your own Azure subscription before class 1. Creating one needs a payment card for verification, and you pay for your own Azure usage. The course uses free offers and the smallest service tiers wherever possible, and every class ends with a cleanup step.
  • You need a Windows computer with an SSD of at least 500 GB and at least 16 GB of memory (RAM), because the migration classes run a local SQL Server as the source database.
  • A second monitor is required, so you can follow the instructor's shared screen on one and practice on the other.
